When Respect Fades: The Real Cost of Ignoring Relationships
It’s disheartening to see how often long-standing relationships are treated with so little regard. Whether in business or personal life, being ghosted, dismissed, or given empty promises that never materialize is more than just frustrating—it’s disrespectful.
When someone you’ve trusted for years disregards commitments or disappears without explanation, it reveals more about their character than their words ever could. True professionalism and authentic friendship are built on respect, honesty, and reliability. Without those foundations, there can be no real trust.
Every interaction—large or small—leaves an impression. Following through matters. Treating people with integrity matters. When someone can’t manage either, they show us exactly where we stand. And as painful as that realization can be, it is also a gift, because it reminds us to invest our time and energy in people who value us as we value them.
How do you decide which relationships are worth continuing to invest in when respect and reliability are missing?
This is a two-way street. I have to remind myself that I’m called to treat others with dignity and respect, both personally and professionally. My guiding principle is to always listen to anyone who approaches me with an opportunity that could improve my life or benefit my business. Why wouldn’t I? What if ignoring someone means missing out on something valuable for myself or those I influence? If I disrespect that person by ghosting or making excuses, I not only diminish my own character, but I might also close the door on an opportunity.
Ultimately, how you treat people matters—especially in relationships built over time. Giving time and attention, even to those from our distant past, elevates our character and affirms to others that they are valued.
What does integrity in relationships—business or personal—look like to you?
